Waterbased Oils Recommendation
Classes Winter 2026
If you are taking an oil painting class with me, bring what you have to the first class. I do recommend round, bristle brushes. I usually use a size 8 and a size 4. The only thing special is to please use oderless thinner as turps and some thinners make me feel sick.
If you do not have oil paints, then I would recommend starting with the Winsor Newton Artisan Water based oils.
This list was made at Jerry's artarama's online store

Brand: Winsor and Newton
Set of 10, 37 ml Tube
Colors: Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow Deep Hue, Cadmium Orange Hue, Permanent Alizarin Crimson, Cerulean Blue Hue, French Ultramarine, Phthalo Green (Blue Shade), Yellow Ochre, Burnt Umber, and Titanium White
I really like round bristle brushes. Winsor & Newton makes them to go with the Artisan paints and I think they are worth the money. I buy a size 8 & a size 4.

Paper Pallettes
Wooden pallettes don't work great for the waterbased oils. The easiest thing is paper pallettes . These are grey ones by Richardson. The 9 x 12 size is under $12.

Winsor & Newton Griffin Alkyd
The one down side of the water soluble oils is that they don't dry very fast. To solve that problem, I buy a tube of the Griffen Alykd white and mix it 1/2 and 1/2 with my Artisan white.
This is the brand they have in the Providence Jerry's store. I like it fine, but it might be more expensive and I don' t know if they have sets.
There are so many choices. Click here for a little video on my two favorite surfaces.
I don't use medium and if you want to know why, check out this little video.
I really like to paint with a painting knife, not to be confused with the rounded palette knife you use to clean your palette. I always start with a brush because it is quicker, but the knife gives you painting excellent texture and keeps your colors cleaner. It has been hard to find a new one I like, but this is about the right shape.
